(Tamarindus indica)
Tamarind is a tropical fruit tree native to Africa but widely naturalized and cultivated in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, and other warm regions of the world. Its acidic and aromatic fruit is highly valued in gastronomy, traditional medicine, and the food industry.
This tree belongs to the Fabaceae (legume) family and can reach between 12 and 20 meters in height. It has a robust trunk, rough bark, spreading branches, and a wide, leafy canopy. It has semi-evergreen foliage, with small, symmetrical compound leaves that provide good shade.
Fruit and Uses
The tamarind fruit is an elongated pod, brown on the outside and sticky on the inside, containing a sweet and sour pulp surrounding hard seeds. This pulp is rich in tartaric acid, sugars, fiber, and antioxidants.
