(Cocos Nucifera): The tropical life tree
The coconuto, scientifically known as Cocos Nucifera, is one of the most emblematic palm trees in the tropical world. Considered a symbol of paradisiacal beaches and warm climates, this tree not only stands out for its beauty, but also for its ecological, economic and cultural importance.
Botanical description
The coconuto belongs to the Arecaceae family and is the only species of the genus Cocos. It is a unique stem palm that can reach up to 30 meters high, with a diameter that varies between 20 and 40 centimeters. Its trunk is smooth, ringing and slightly inclined, adapted to resist the strong coastal winds.
The leaves, known as fronds, are pinnate (pen) and can measure between 4 and 6 meters long. When maturing, the leaves fall, leaving characteristic marks in the trunk.
The fruit: the coconut
The fruit of the coconuto is the famous coconut. It is a fibrous drup composed of three layers:
- Exocarp (outer layer): green or brown according to maturity.
