(Roystonea regia)

The Royal Palm, scientifically known as Roystonea regia, is one of the most majestic and representative palms of the tropical regions of the Americas. Native to the Caribbean, Florida, Central America, and parts of South America, this species is especially emblematic in countries like Cuba, where it is considered the national tree.

It is a large palm tree, reaching between 20 and 30 meters in height. Its trunk is straight, smooth, and light gray, with a characteristic thickening at the base and a glossy green upper section known as the stipe, from which its large, pinnate leaves emerge. These leaves, which can measure more than 4 meters in length, form an elegant crown at the top of the trunk.

The Royal Palm blooms year-round in warm climates, producing branched inflorescences with small white or creamy flowers, which give rise to rounded, dark, and shiny fruits, highly prized by birds and other wildlife. This species is widely cultivated for ornamental purposes due to its imposing presence, natural elegance, and ability to beautify boulevards, public gardens, plazas, and building entrances. Its root system is deep but non-invasive, making it suitable for urban areas.

Roystonea regia prefers tropical and subtropical climates, well-drained soils, and direct sunlight. It is resistant to strong winds, making it an excellent choice for coastal areas and regions with tropical storms.

In addition to its aesthetic value, the royal palm has ecological and cultural importance: it provides shelter and food for wildlife, and is a symbol of identity in several Caribbean and Latin American cultures.
