(Delonix regia)
The framboyan tree, scientifically known as Delonix regia, is a beautiful ornamental tree native to Madagascar and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It is also known as the flamboyan, fire tree, or flame tree due to the intensity of its flowering.
It is a fast-growing deciduous tree that can reach 8 to 12 meters in height. It has elegant foliage, composed of finely divided leaves reminiscent of ferns, and a wide, umbrella-shaped crown that provides abundant shade. Its most notable feature is its spectacular flowering: large, bright red, orange, or scarlet flowers that almost completely cover the tree during spring and summer.
The fruit of the framboyan tree is an elongated, woody pod that can measure up to 60 cm long and contains numerous seeds. Although its primary value is ornamental, it is also recognized for its ability to beautify urban spaces, parks, avenues, and gardens, where it becomes a striking focal point.
Delonix regia thrives in warm, sunny climates, prefers well-drained soils, and tolerates periods of drought once established. It is not suitable for cold climates or climates with prolonged frost.
In addition to its visual appeal, the flamboyant tree contributes to the environment with cool shade, enhancing the urban landscape, and attracting birds and pollinators.
